Why Earn a Youth Ministry Degree at CCU?
The answer: Classes, Professors, Internships, and Extra Opportunities
Classes
“What does a person need to know before going into youth ministry?”
That was the question asked of a couple of groups of experienced youth ministers. Their answers shaped the program–one of the strongest Youth Ministry Degree programs in the country.
The required classes are both Theological and Practical–designed to prepare a person for youth ministry. Youth Ministry students take classes in Bible, Communication, Psychology, Personal and Church Finances, Leadership, General Ministry, Education, and of course–Youth Ministry.
The youth ministry classes cover areas such as counseling youth, how to teach teens, reaching teens for Jesus, putting together a successful youth ministry and planning in youth ministry-weekly events, bible studies, a week of church camp, big events, mission trips, etc.
Professors and Instructors
The 20+ professors teaching in this degree program are the best in their field–World-class Biblical scholars. These are teachers on the cutting edge of ministry, men and women with years of ministry experience. In fact, the two professors who teach the core youth ministry classes served in CIY (Christ In Youth) and in the local church gaining a combination of almost 50 years of youth ministry experience before coming to CCU. Added to that is the regular use of guest speakers in the classroom — youth ministers currently involved with some of the most dynamic churches in the US.
Emphasis on Internships
Each degree candidate must complete a 3-7 month internship at a church or para-church organization (church camp, children’s home, concert ministries, Young Life, etc.). In the internship the student works full-time under the direction of a successful youth leader and learns firsthand what youth ministry is all about. Of course this is required for the Youth Ministry degree so class credit is received for completing an internship. It is amazing the growth that takes place in this “hands on, in the trenches” experience.
Extra Curricular Opportunities
Opportunities to serve-Variety of opportunities. Living in a large city gives one a tremendous opportunity to serve in all kinds of places. There is urban youth ministry, suburban youth ministry, large church youth ministry, small church youth ministry, High school campus ministry, and the list goes on and on. Whatever your youth ministry passion is you will find a place to use that enthusiasm.
Nu Delta Sigma (Youth Ministry Society)-This is a student-led group made up of people interested in youth ministry. Each month a gifted Youth Minister/Youth Leader is invited to share their ideas with the students.
Youth Ministry Summit-Once a year in the Spring, a day is planned where top Youth Ministers from all over the country are brought in to share their knowledge and experience with Youth Ministry students and other youth ministers.
