We hope that you had a great Christmas break and are looking forward to a great Spring semester!

Our athletic program received some very positive news regarding our student-athletes for the Fall 2011 semester. The overall GPA of our student-athletes was 2.97 with 45 of the 88 student-athletes on our rosters registering grades of 3.00 or better. For 19 of these men and women, their GPA’s were 3.5 or higher. We also had a women’s soccer player, a men’s soccer player, and a men’s basketball player achieve a perfect 4.00.

We also had nearly 100% completion of the CCU Spiritual Development Plan for the Fall semester with only 2 of the 88 still having issues of not reporting or completing their requirements. Those two should be rectified shortly.

Obviously, we are very proud of the job our student-athletes have done off the playing fields and courts this year as well as how they have represented CCU in competition.

Men’s Basketball:
Our men’s basketball team is currently the only group in season right now. They have been back at practice since Jan 2 and already have 2 home games under their belt this month. Last week saw them lose a tough game to UC-Clermont followed by a tightly contested 4 point loss to conference foe Berea.

This week, they play Tuesday night against conference opponent Alice Lloyd at 7:00 pm. Thursday night, they play against the team favored to repeat as conference champions, IU-Southeast, also at 7:00 pm. Both of these games will take place in President’s Hall.

11/20/11 – Update

The Eagles of CCU fell to 3-4 on the season after an 87-85 road loss at
the hands of Lindenwood-Belleville (IL) in a high scoring, fast pace
shootout.

CCU trailed 49-38 at the half, but connected on 10 second half three point
attempts to close the gap. CCU fought their way back to even the score at
85-85 with just under 35 seconds to play. With 33 seconds left in
regulation, L-B hit a contested jumper to go up 87-85. CCU had one last
look at the basket, but CCU’s Jermel McKenzie’s shot sailed wide of the
basket & the Eagles fell by the final score & the two point margin.

CCU hit 15 of 37 three point attempts on the night. The Eagles connected
on 14 of 19 free throw attempts (73%). The Eagles were out rebounded
44-21. However, in the discrepancy in the rebounding margin, CCU was only
out rebounded by three on the offensive boards (10-7). L-B hit two of
eight shots from behind the arc on the night & 19 of 31 free throws (61%).

“We put ourselves in a position to win” said CCU assistant coach, John
Witherspoon. “That’s all we can ask of the guys. We made a strong second
half surge, but just came up short”.

CCU was led by Carlton Shumake’s 28 points, four assists, & three steals.
Jeff McClintic, LJ Dimanche, & Perry Smith each chipped in 12 points
apiece for CCU. Perry Smith connected on four of five long range attempts
& Jermel McKenzie added 11 points & four assists for the Eagles.

L-B’s Devon Weaver led all scorers with 31 points.

CCU will be in action again when they travel to Athens, TN on November
25th & 26th for the Tennessee Wesleyan Classic. The Eagles will face Bryan
College on Friday at 6:00pm & then face the host school, Tennessee
Wesleyan on Saturday at 4:00pm.
