The Master of Arts in Religion degree is oriented toward general and theological studies. The MAR degree has two options, a 54 hour option for those without a background in Bible, theology or a related field, and a 36-hour option for those who with a background in Bible theology or a related field. For the field of counseling and family studies, students should choose the Pastoral Leadership Concentration and can choose an emphasis of Pastoral Counseling or Family Studies.
Students graduating with a Master of Arts in Religion with a concentration in Pastoral Leadership will:
- Construct a theology for the practice of ministry in contemporary cultural contexts.
- Have effective ministry and leadership skills to help accomplish the church’s mission.
- Have a mature love for God and be committed to personal Christian discipleship.
- Be able to communicate effectively.
- Have met the objectives outlined in the chosen area of concentrated study.
The Family Studies concentration is designed to meet the increasing demand for highly qualified persons to serve the multiple needs of families within a complex, technological society. The major objectives of the program are to: study human and family development from birth through adult age; prepare for professional careers related to working with families and individuals in both home, church, and community environments, while developing responsible adults with knowledge and skills for marriage, parenthood and social roles. If a student plans to pursue certification in family life education, consultation with the faculty adviser is recommended.
Students who satisfactorily complete the requirements with a concentration in Family Studies will be able to:
- Identify and describe the theoretical foundations for family studies.
- Develop, conduct, and evaluate family life programs and services.
- Evaluate skills to help families meet challenges of family life and its environs.
- Apply strategies to assist families in growing toward health.
- Complete graduate level research and writing in the field of family studies.
