DEGREE PROGRAMS
The purpose of the 75-hour Master of Arts in Counseling program
is to prepare counselors with strong Christian philosophical foundations
accompanied by excellent skills to do Christian counseling in
churches, agencies, and counseling centers. It is designed to
prepare professional counselors to be properly credentialed by
the state in which they practice and is in compliance with national
training standards. The Master of Arts in Counseling degree fulfills
the educational requirements for licensure as a professional counselor
with clinical endorsement in the State of Ohio, and also satisfies
the educational requirements for credentialing as a National Certified
Counselor.
Students graduating from this program shall:
- Utilize their own spiritual and psychological
development to facilitate their work with others.
- Demonstrate a concern for the spiritual
and psychological needs of others and an appreciation for the
uniqueness of people.
- Integrate interpersonal qualities and
theoretical understandings that translate into effective counseling
relationships.
- Demonstrate competency in the following
areas: assessment, appraisal, diagnosis, treatment planning
and evaluation.
- Demonstrate an effective integration of
theology, psychology, and counseling within a biblical context.
- Be skilled in the necessary specialization
areas and understand the professional settings in which they
are employed.
This degree is not available to international
students who have not completed the Master of Arts in Religion
with a concentration in Pastoral Leadership and a specialization
in Pastoral Counseling.
The Master of Arts in Religion is oriented towards general and
theological studies. The MAR degree has two options, a 54 hour
option for those without a background in Bible, theology or a
related field and a 36-hour option for those who with a background
in Bible theology or a related field. For the field
of counseling and family studies, students should
choose the Pastoral Leadership Concentration and can choose an
emphasis of Pastoral Counseling or Family Studies. (See complete

Students graduating with a Master of Arts
(Religion) with a concentration in Pastoral Leadership will:
- Have constructed a theology for the practice
of ministry in contemporary cultural contexts.
- Have skill in effective ministry and leadership
in order to help the church accomplish its mission.
- Have a mature love for God and be committed
to personal Christian discipleship.
- Be able to communicate effectively.
- Have met the objectives outlined in the
chosen area of concentrated study.
