  • PMW 2808 Intro to Worship Leadership
The course covers both practical and philosophical aspects of leading worship, and both musical and other aspects of corporate assemblies. It includes a survey of worship styles and materials, and provides opportunity for planning and leading.
  • PMW 3808  Psalms, Hymns & Spiritual Songs
A survey of worship materials intended for congregational singing. The course begins with the study of scriptural, theological, and historical approaches to texts. It emphasizes hymn stories and backgrounds of authors and composers, as well as current trends in congregational song. Musical elements are dealt with on a basic level; no musical experience is required.
  • TTH 3728  Theology of Worship
This course will investigate the biblical basis and practice of Christian worship with application for today’s church. The study also includes some consideration of ancient worship practices and addresses the concept of worship both in the corporate life of the congregation and in the personal life of the Christian.
  • PMW 3818  Worship Ministry in the Church
This course is a survey of the life and work of a full-time worship minister in a local church. The course begins by helping students clarify their own philosophy of music ministry. Then it covers practical aspects of both music and general ministry.
  • PMW 1158  Music Theory for Worship
Music Theory for Worship is an introductory survey of functional harmony, with application in music for congregational use. The course includes both fretboard and keyboard theory, and uses both written notation and chord charts, with an emphasis on popular current harmonic practice. Prerequisite: Music Fundamentals.
  • PMW 4168  Writing & Arranging for Worship
Principles and practice in effective composition of hymns and worship music. The course studies elements of quality lyrics, melodies, harmonies and form, and provides the student with opportunity to compose new music for worship. Then it covers techniques of arranging for keyboard, worship team, choir, worship band, orchestra, and electronic instruments. Brief writing projects are assigned to provide practical and inductive learning experiences. Prerequisite: Music Theory for Worship.
  • PMW 2178  Worship & Technology
This course is an introduction to all facets of production technology (sound, projection, lights, video, sequencing, notation), enabling students to engineer any technical aspect of a worship service. The course also covers basics of music production and notation on modern computers, as well as presentation software and basic video production.
  • PMW 3848  Worship & the Arts
Worship and the Arts is an introduction to the various expressions of the arts in worship, including the biblical basis for the arts as worship. The forms studied will include such expressions as music, painting, sculpture, drama, print media and expressive movement. Special attention will be given to exploring ways to enhance the worship assembly through the use of the arts.

Plus:

Field experience. Each student must be involved in the worship ministry of a local church, which commits to provide oversight and experience. Four 10-week documented sessions are required.  Before graduation, the student will initiate and lead in a 30-minute worship event (see paper for component requirements). The event will be video recorded in order to receive credit.

Music Fundamentals. A course in the fundamentals of music is prerequisite to Music Theory for Worship. It can be taken online (in conjunction with a weekend bridge class) or in a Thursday evening classroom setting for 10 weeks, two hours each night. (Offered every fall)

Applied lessons. Private music lessons will be available on campus in voice, piano and guitar. Some students may seek permission to continue in lessons from an off-campus instructor with whom they are familiar, with certain limitations. Every spring, a group voice class will be offered to prepare students for private applied lessons. Voice proficiency must be demonstrated before moving on to the student’s primary instrumental track (either guitar or piano), and proficiency in a primary instrumental concentration must be demonstrated before the student may advance to other instruments. Applied lessons will be taken for 60 weeks, regardless of proficiency, in order to graduate. (Lessons and studios are offered when Music Fundamentals and Worship Voice Class are not in session.)

Worship Studio. A major component of worship leading is to be a part of a worship ensemble and to lead peers in worship in a small group setting. These goals are met through a worship studio, in which the student must satisfactorily have participated for 60 weeks.
